GRAPHIC DESIGN 3 // NATURE OF INTERACTION
In growing cities, parking challenges require creative solutions.
Research Summary
With the high percentage of vehicle ownership in the United States, parking has become a conflicting and confusing situation for a number of people. Whether at an airport, bus stations and shopping centers, problems with parking are an everyday occurrence. Lack of accessible parking can hurt local business and decrease the quality of life for residents. Due to the importance of parking, cities study and analyze parking programs and performance on an ongoing basis. The following list identifies the kinds of problems that typically occur in a community. People spend hours to search a parking spot in the crowd and wish they knew a specific spot with in their budget and comfort.
In neighborhoods with good access to transit and services, parking works against their advantages as urban places–it encourages driving, takes up space and makes things more expensive. As parking is built where real alternatives to driving exist, more people are encouraged to drive and those San Franciscans that must drive find it ever more difficult and expensive to do so.
People are rational: they get around by the most convenient and reliable means. Every parking space we create makes it more attractive to drive. The problem is that our streets are reaching capacity. There is no room to expand them, short of knocking down buildings. By encouraging people to drive, parking puts more cars on our streets–and further degrades their quality, worsening traffic and delaying transit service. We can never build enough parking, because the more we build, the more people will choose to drive.
As a new wave of people flood cities to live, work and play, many arrive on four wheels — cars, which are creating massive headaches for city planners and drivers. Smart cities are looking into reducing parking issues that cause street congestion and wasted time for drivers searching for spaces. Off-street parking isn’t a solution: it is costly to build and takes space that could be used for other, more interesting uses.
